Honestly, I’m not usually a young-adult-fiction kind of reader, but I was given a review copy of this three-book volume and decided to give it a whirl. All opinions my own, I’m not being paid — or held hostage, honest!

At first glance, it appears to be standard dystopian sci-fi young adult fare: boy meets girl, they study together at a futuristic school in space, and together they uncover a sinister plot.

However, this summary doesn’t even begin to do this debut justice. It’s an elegantly written page-turner, with a brilliant execution of the first-person perspective that somehow never becomes cliché or dull, and genuinely unique world-building ideas.

It is less “Hunger Games” and more whodunnit, with our adorably geeky protagonists having to figure out who is behind a series of shady happenings. The mystery is intriguing and tricky enough to keep older readers engaged while not getting too complex for younger readers.

What also makes this stand out is that it has action and romance while still being very “clean”. There is nothing inappropriate for younger readers, so this is an excellent choice if you have a pre-teen who reads at a higher level than average for their age but is too young for most teen content.

My only real complaint is that this three-book volume leaves me hanging — I have far too many unanswered questions! The plot is a bit sparse for three books, so I would recommend reading all three as one book, and I’m looking forward to the next volume!
